Braj
bhoomi in West UP is probably the best place in India during the HOLI
weekend.
Barsana, the birth place of Radha,
celebrates HOLI in a unique way. During the festival, men are beaten up by
women with long bamboo sticks and men have to save themselves with a shield. During
this the men are not allowed to fight back or get angry! Ever imagined such a HOLI,
known as “Lath Maar HOLI”?
Lord Krishna was born in Mathura and he
spent his childhood in Vrindavan. Both these places are immersed in the joy
weeks before HOLI. This is the place to celebrate the most traditional and
cultural HOLI in India. Long processions with colors and music takes place
along the river Yamuna to the HOLI gate!

2. Shantiniketan , West Bengal
The land of the Nobel Laureate Rabindranath
Tagore, Shantiniketan celebrates HOLI as Basant
Utsav (Spring Festival). Students of Vishwa Bharti University dress up in
spring colors and a huge event is organized for the visitors’ which includes
dancing on the tunes of Tagore’s song. This is then followed by usual color
play of HOLI.

3. Purulia , West Bengal
Purulia is a 5 hour drive away from Kolkata
and is known for the best folk and traditional HOLI celebration in whole of
Bengal. The HOLI celebrations include Chau dance, Darbari Jhumur, Natua Dance

4. DELHI
When it comes to the colorful festival, the

to celebrate HOLI! Not only that the HOLI of Delhi is different from all other

5. Anandpur Sahib , Punjab
If you want to experience HOLI Sikh way
then head to Anandpur Sahib in Punjab! Hola Mohalla is an annual fair which
started by Sikh Guru Gobind Singh Ji way back in 1701 A.D. and continues to take place even today.
However this festival does not include colors and instead is the demonstration of physical strength and agility. Wresting , Martial Arts , Sword Fights and Turban tying are few of the events that take place.

6. Jaipur , Rajasthan
Rajasthan is quite a vibrant state in
itself when come to any festival and HOLI is not different at all. Jaipur welcomes HOLI every year by a massive parade
comprising of intricately decorated elephants , camels , horses and folk
dancers on the streets of the city. It is one of its kind celebrations and
often termed as Elephant Festival of Jaipur. A tug of war between 20 men and an
elephant is a must watch!

7. Mumbai , Maharashtra
The
city of Govinda, a name given to the city because popular HOLI celebrations. HOLI parties just like
in Delhi are arranged on almost every street in the city.
Because of the presence of lot of Bollywood celebrities the HOLI of Mumbai does turn into an interesting festival with celebs celebrating in their own unique way!

8. Varanasi , Uttar Pradesh
HOLI
celebrations in Varanasi are quite spectacular and iconic. The day prior to HOLI
, a large bonfire is lit on the banks of the river Ganges. Once it is over , many
people rub the ashes all over their body as they believe it cures any ailments
to them and purify their body.

9. GOA
Goa’s answer to the festival of colors is Shigmotsav. It is not exactly the
festival of colors and rather is a blend between the colorful festival and a
carnival. Well it does stands out to be the biggest festival of Hindus in Goa
and lasts for a fortnight. The grande finale of the festival is held on the same
day as HOLI.
Men in colorful dresses carrying flags , banners and beating drums take on the streets. The parade assembles at the temple where dances are held which is followed by light play of color.

10. Kullu and Slang Pass , Himachal Pradesh
While the rest of Himachal celebrates HOLI
in the same way as in any other Northern part of India, Kullu and Slang Pass is one of the places which celebrates HOLI
by mixing snow with colors making it an “Ice-HOLI”.

11. Indore, Madhya Pradesh
Revelry is no less in Madhya Pradesh and
same level of enthusiasm can be seen amongst the citizens of this state as in
the rest of North. Indore in specific is famous for HOLI celebrations in MP ,
the heart of India.
A 5 day festival comes to an end with Pancham HOLI. It is said the Maratha Holkars who conquered the state brought with them Marathi tradition of Rangpanchami- where the colour are played on the fifth day.
