Tirthan Valley – An Offbeat Weekend Chill Pill !

The temperature here in the National Capital was increasing day by day. Also it has been more than 2 months since I last went out on a holiday. The urge of running to the mountains was, thus getting stronger with every sunrise. I dropped in the message about the same to my buddies and in no time we were a group of 6 (Ashish, Ankit, Rahul, Gaurav, Divyam and Kriti) ready to run on a holiday. This time none of us wanted to go to the regular and more popular hill stations like Nainital , Shimla , Mussoorie , Manali etc. I did my research well to find a new offbeat and quite a soothing place to chill – The Tirthan Valley!

Welcome to Tirthan Valley

Tirthan Valley is located in Himachal Pradesh, around 500kms from the NCR region. Despite situated at 5300 feets only (Mussoorie is at 6500 feet) this place because of almost no commercialization has a max temp of 25-27 degrees only. 

The name is derived from the “Tirthan” river – a tributary of river Beas which flows across it. We immediately left off for the place by road. We left in the evening so as to reach by early morning. (It is a 13-14 hours’ drive one way from Delhi). In the night, we also stopped by Sukhdev Dhaba in Murthal to have dinner.

We reached Mandi, a district in HP by the time of breakfast. After having our breakfast we took a detour from the Manali’s route towards Tirthan Valley from the Aut tunnel. The route from here on was very scenic and we all were feeling anxious about our holiday. On the way we also passed by Pandoh Lake and Pandoh Dam.

During my research beforehand I got to know that there is scarcity of accommodation in Tirthan. So I had to call in at 10 different places to finally get a good and decent riverside accommodation for us. As soon as we reached there, we were spellbound by the beauty of the location in which home stay was present.

Red hut shaped structure, clean and pure river flowing by, mountains all around and greenery was to be seen everywhere. It felt like the picture has been taken right out one’s imagination.

It had started raining as we reached the place, so we played gully cricket inside the guest house only. After the rain had stopped we came out to have fun in the playground in the front of guesthouse. We then decided to have some adventure near the river. Although we initially decided to take a bath near the river banks, but the water was so cold that we could barely wash our hand & feet.

Soon we were back to playing cricket, badminton, football etc. in the playground. In the evening we decided to go for "Trout Fishing". Tirthan has been a major attraction for trout fishing enthusiasts. Wild Brown Trout and Rainbow Trout are found here.

We had to go some 2-3 kms away from our guesthouse at a particular spot where we could catch the fish. Although none of us know how to operate a fishing rod, but we were soon taught the same by our guide. You need to have a hell lot of patience to catch fish. You also need to be present at the right place at the right time (around 6:30 pm).

We finally were not able to catch even a single fish but we enjoyed every bit of this moment. Atleast we are trained for the next fishing adventure.

It was dark till the time we left the place and reach our guest house. The shops here starts closing by 8 pm. At night you can chillax in your room playing cards or sit by river to enjoy the beautiful weather. Bonfire options are also available here.

The next morning three of us went for the waterfall trek. We started early at 5:30 AM to enjoy the weather. The trek started with climbing lots of staircase and then the real path of the trek showed its face. A dog also did the trek with us which was a scary issue for us.

The thought that we were on the wrong path came to us a lot of times but when we had the first glimpse of the waterfall, it was a WIN WIN situation. The waterfall was one of the most beautiful waterfalls I had seen in my life. We stayed there, we clicked pictures , we did some adventure to reach closer to waterfall and made those memorable moments of the trip.

 While returning from the trek, the nature showed its true colours. I wish I could stay there for my entire life.

Our next blog will be to Jalori Pass and Trek to Serolsar Lake. The trek is at a height of more than 10,000 feet and at distance of about 30 kms from Tirthan Valley.
